This week we congratulate our chair Paul O’Donoghue, the genial and tireless face of the club (for decades) on what seemed like one of his most difficult challenges. In the last week he rode the 1000km Alicante Audax event which took in a staggering 15,000 metres of climbing in the allotted 75 hours for the event. In true fashion he completed within the allocated time but faced some huge battles over the three days of the test especially with sleep. However this is not his first time completing this event but this time the route and conditions made it harder it seems. He is now on a 900km meander north towards San Sebastian and finally Biarritz, before we see him at the end of the month. Mighty!
This weekend we have three spins with our in form man Stephen Healy taking the Saturday spin and the always in form Eileen and Patrick ruling the roost on Sunday; see you there and let us know if you are attending on the What’s App groups.

This week the big guns are in town with the Irish Road Race Championships taking place on our patch, with our own Suzanne White competing in the ladies race at 1pm on Saturday. It was no pain no gain, on probably currently one of the best stretches of tarmac in Co.Wicklow, Altidore, with an average gradient of 12.4% over it’s 1.05km route, the venue for the Sorrento CC Hillclimb Championship, final event in the 2021 league. It certainly went down to the wire in the last of the Summer league races with only a slim margin separating the top four riders in the league standings going into ultimate race.
The race favourite and acknowledged star of the hillclimb in past years, Dave Peelo did not disappoint with a stunning performance of 4.42 minutes just over a minute quicker than his fellow club coach Aidan Ryan on this backbreaking challenge.
The win propelled Peelo to the winning spot in the league with Roy Bowden taking second place overall with Aidan Ryan on the third step of the podium. The leading lady this year was none other than Eileen O’Sullivan with two races wins and one second place cementing her place as sixth place overall closely followed by Suzanne White in seventh place.
What a great year for the club with huge advances across multiple disciplines in road and track racing especially our lady members getting our name out there and not forgetting our male stalwarts in vets racing as well as a revitalised A4 racer getting his name ino the results in Mondello on a near weekly basis…
Big thanks to George for his skills with the stopwatch, POD for his direction and tireless flag waving skills, a big mention too for Aidan, the arch villain handicapper who managed to keep everyone honest.
On a misty night in the Wicklow hills, inform rider Aine MacCarthy, fresh from a podium place this week in the ladies series at Corkagh Park, took honours on the corncrake circuit. The racing was fast and furious but didn’t put off Aine who led in Eileen O’Sullivan for a great one, two for the ladies.
The scratchman Paul Cullinan had to work hard on this shorter route to catch those ahead and his labours paid off to claim third place on the night just one minute down on the winner.
The league is now very tight at the top with one race left(Hill Climb) with full handicap points being available on the Altidore climb. The leader Paul Cullinan is now three points ahead of Roy Bowden with Dave Peelo a further two back.
Last Race;
Thursday 26th August – Altidore- The Grove Bar 7.30pm.

A canny early sprint by Danny McDermott gave him his first victory of the year leaving his mentor and fellow Cycle Safari’s stalwart Aidan Ryan in second place by a whisker last night on the Kilmacurragh finishing straight, with Aine MacCarthy for a fine third spot, in a vital race for some of the league leaders with aspirations of league champion 2021.
Its all up for grabs as Dave Peelo leads but still has a marshalling duty to fulfill with Paul Cullinan and Roy Bowden close by but with no duties left outstanding. The next race is on the Corncrake circuit next Thursday and that will surely finalise the placings for this year.

A great night for the future of the club with the inagural running of the Ladies 10 mile TT championship on the Danny O’Shea course from Jack Whites in Brittas Bay.
Following a day of wild weather the gods were shining on the Sorrento riders with nearly dry roads and favourable winds on this rolling test.
The winner in the ladies section was Suzanne White who has taken a number of wins this year and is enjoying here racing year so far on both road and now on the track as well, followed in second place by Jackie MacNamee by a slim margin ahead of Aine MacCarthy in third spot. A superb performance by Suzanne whose time would have been good enough to take second in the men’s race .
The men’s championship was won by Paul Cullinan just outside of the sub 24 minute time with Alan MacNamee and Patrick Bradshaw rounding out the top three.
The handicap section proved a happy hunting ground for Eileen O’Sullivan taking the overall win for a second time this season making it a great night for the girls in the club. In second Patrick Bradshaw ahead of Suzanne White by .06 of a second…
With three races left the league is still up for grabs with both first and second still with a marshalling duty left third placed rider Roy Bowden can make up some ground in the coming weeks.
Next Race; L9 Beehive – CP5 Kilmacurragh Circuit over 30kms- Thursday 12th August 7.30pm.
Ladies Track Team
Best of luck to our girls riding in the team nationals event on Saturday, riding the Team Sprint and Team Pursuit races, a first for the club with Aine Mac Carthy, Aine Goggins, Cathy McCormack and Suzanne White flying the flag for Sorrento CC…what a day…results and pics in the Whats App groups tomorrow.

The Filterbed’s circuit delivered some fast racing last night in race seven with league fastman Paul Cullinan pulling away from the pack midway through the second lap of this 22kms sprint to take first place from Roy Bowden with a tussle behind between Aubrey Shaw taking third from Aidan Ryan collecting fourth.
The league now is tied between Dave Peelo (marshalling this week) and Paul Cullinan, the latter making up ground in the title race but neither can afford to lose focus with Roy Bowden only four points off the pair ,so nothing is decided with four races still to be run.
Next week(Thursday 5th August) we move back to the Beehive for the 10 Mile Championship TT starting at 7.30pm.
